The Coalition for Just Reparations (C4JR), with the support of IOM Iraq, is publishing regular newsletters on the Yazidi Survivors Law (YSL) in three languages. Check out the seventh newsletter now, in English, Arabic, and Kurdish (Sorani and Kurmanji).
In this seventh edition of the C4JR newsletter, we provide the latest updates on the Yazidi Survivors’ Law (YSL), a pivotal transitional justice framework addressing the atrocities committed by ISIL in Iraq. This issue covers the latest developments regarding its implementation, and the challenges communities are facing.
The seventh issue of the Coalition for Just Reparations (C4JR) newsletter covers:
- Reparation Payments: The Directorate of Survivors’ Affairs has disbursed reparations to 1,834 ISIL survivors covered by the YSL as of June 2024.
- Financial Reward for Information on Abductees: Available for information leading to the rescue of abducted individuals from Yazidi, Shabak, Turkman, and Christian communities. To report a case, use the toll-free number 5775.
- High-Level Meetings and Support: On the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict, Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa al-Sudani met with survivors to discuss their needs and challenges. The government reaffirmed its commitment to support survivors.
- International Engagements: The Director General of the Directorate recently visited the Iraqi Embassy in Paris to address issues facing survivors residing there and to discuss the establishment of video conferencing for criminal investigation documentation.
- Support from the Kurdistan Region: Prime Minister Masrour Barzani announced a financial assistance program for 3,000 women and girls who survived ISIL, aiming to improve their financial situation, provide job opportunities, and ensure access to education and health services.
- New Guides and Reports: C4JR launched a guide on using human rights indicators to monitor rehabilitation rights for ISIL survivors. Additionally, the Free Yezidi Foundation, in collaboration with Fordham University, published a report on enhancing the implementation of the YSL based on international best practices.
- Challenges and Recommendations: The newsletter addresses challenges faced by survivors in obtaining security clearance for YSL applications and recommends adopting international best practices to ease the process.
- Upcoming Events: As the tenth anniversary of the Yazidi Genocide approaches, numerous events and advocacy campaigns are planned to raise awareness and highlight the ongoing struggle for justice and accountability.
