Today, August 3, to marks the anniversary of the Yazidi genocide, the Coalition for Just Reparations (C4JR) releases a new episode of its podcast series, “More Than Ink on Paper: Implementing the Yazidi Survivors Law.”
The episode brings together Adeeba Murad, a Yazidi survivor and human rights defender, and Umm Mustafa, the mother of a son who remains missing following the Camp Speicher massacre. Together, they discuss their experiences applying for reparations under the Yazidi Survivors Law and the Camp Speicher Law, including the institutional challenges they faced, their perceptions surrounding accountability for ISIS crimes, and the lasting psychological impact of violence, loss and uncertainty in their lives.
Although they come from different communities, their stories reveal shared experiences of pain, waiting, and the pursuit of justice. The conversation highlights how solidarity and mutual understanding among communities harmed by ISIS can contribute to collective healing and more responsive reparations policies.
The episode builds on the conference “From Laws to Justice: Commemorating the 12th Anniversary of the Camp Speicher Massacre,” held by C4JR, Jiyan Foundation for Human Rights and The Victims of Iraq in Speicher-1700 NGO in June. The event launched a comparative study examining the implementation and intersections of the two reparations laws.
On this important anniversary, Adeeba Murad and Umm Mustafa call for effective implementation of reparations laws, meaningful accountability, sustained psychological and rehabilitation support, and concrete action to determine the fate of those who remain missing.
