The Coalition for Just Reparations (C4JR) publishes regular newsletters to share accurate and up-to-date information on the Yazidi Survivors’ Law (YSL) and to reflect the views and experiences of the various actors involved in implementing this landmark transitional justice framework addressing atrocities committed by ISIL in Iraq.
Highlights from Issue #16 include:
- Application statistics: 2,216 survivors covered by the YSL received reparations in July 2026.
- Healthcare and education: The Directorate continues to coordinate free healthcare for survivors in Nineveh, while a new joint committee with the Ministry of Education will review curricula and promote tolerance, peaceful coexistence, and the rejection of hatred and extremism.
- Remembering the Yazidi genocide: The 12th anniversary of the Yazidi genocide was commemorated in Sinjar and across the diaspora, including events in The Hague, Berlin, Hanover, and Geneva, renewing calls for justice and survivor-centred accountability.
- Accountability: The issue highlights the planned Community-Based Truth Commission at the German Bundestag, the July verdict in the Munich case involving crimes against two Yazidi girls, and C4JR’s call for the adoption of Iraq’s Draft Law on Core International Crimes.
- Diaspora survey: C4JR surveyed 91 Yazidi survivors in Canada, Germany, and Australia about their experiences accessing YSL benefits abroad. The findings show positive experiences with remote testimony and Iraqi diplomatic missions—including high levels of satisfaction with consular treatment—while also highlighting the continued reliance of diaspora survivors on representatives (wakeel) to receive compensation on their behalf.
