C4JR’s Criminal Justice Working Group Convenes in Erbil

On June 17, 2025, the Criminal Justice Working Group of the Coalition for Just Reparations (C4JR) held a meeting in Erbil. The gathering brought together members of the Working Group along with civil society actors and institutional partners to discuss key developments related to criminal justice and accountability for ISIS crimes and other serious violations committed in Iraq.

Participants exchanged updates on proposed legislation concerning international crimes, discussed the current landscape of criminal justice in both Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, and reviewed the challenges and opportunities for strengthening domestic prosecutions.

The meeting was attended by the National Center for International Judicial Cooperation, which joined to explore avenues for coordination and cooperation between the Center and C4JR. The Kurdistan Centre for International Law and the Commission for Investigation and Evidence Gathering of the Kurdistan Regional Government also participated in the discussion.

Deliberations emphasized the importance of:

  • Enhancing institutional cooperation
  • Adopting survivor-centered approaches
  • Ensuring that criminal justice efforts are aligned with international standards
