The Coalition for Just Reparations (C4JR) publishes regular newsletters to provide updates on the implementation of the Yazidi Survivors’ Law (YSL). These newsletters share accurate information, highlight key developments, and amplify the views and experiences of those involved in putting this important transitional justice framework into practice for survivors of ISIL atrocities in Iraq.
Key Highlights
Reparations and Services
• 2,216 survivors received reparation payments in October.
• The Directorate, with IOM and Terre des Hommes, launched new literacy and tutoring programs in Sinjar, Duhok, and Mosul.
• SEED and C4JR released a practical legal guide supporting appeals under the YSL.
Accountability and Justice
• A Belgian court convicted an ISIL member of genocide and crimes against humanity.
• C4JR issued a statement warning against including perpetrators under the General Amnesty Law.
• French company Lafarge is now on trial for financing terrorism and armed groups.
Challenges
In each issue of our newsletter, we highlight key challenges faced by survivors and stakeholders in the implementation of the YSL. In October, C4JR representatives conducted a focus group discussion with Turkmen survivors in Tel Afar to document their experiences accessing rights and benefits under the law. Participants identified several ongoing barriers to accessing their right to reparations under the YSL.
